CPR training isn’t new to us but official training has just been in existence for around 30 years. But regardless of it’s relative youth, CPR has a very long history, the first time it was recorded as being used was in 1740 when it was recommended in the treatment of drowning victims by the Parisians.

It took many years to become vital to the medical treatment of casualties. It was not introduced by the American military until 1957. Eventually in 1960 the American Heart Association launched a program designed to train doctors and other medical persons in the use of cardiac pulmonary resuscitation. It wasn’t until the late 1960′s that the CPR training guidelines were formalized.

Coaching for people began in the 1970′s but it wasn’t until the 1980′s that emergency services began to deliver CPR steps by phone to people trying to aid the victim of a cardiac arrest while awaiting the emergency services to arrive. This type of telephone advice is now standard over The USA.

With the increasing availability of the internet CPR agents have made an extremely strong internet presence. In fact if you search for CPR courses you’ll be faced with plenty of options such as those that offer CPR certification at the click of a mouse. Most of these programs could be wonderful but in reality you are wasting your money unless the course is accredited by the Red Cross or the American Heart Association. Both of these organizations provide training and may be willing to come to your school or office if you can generate sufficient interest.

Research has shown that the earlier cardiac pulmonary resuscitation is applied the more likely a cardiac arrest victim is likely to survive. With current survival rates being less than 10% unless your heart stops when you are in hospital you are very unlikely to survive your heart stopping. If more people had their CPR qualification this number would improve considerably.
