Helpful Tips for Beating the High Cost of Auto Insurance

December 9, 2011 | Author: | Posted in Car Insurance

If we’re being honest, we’d be quick to admit that, while we understand the logic and necessity of automobile insurance, most of us think of it at least to some extent as a costly, wasteful financial burden. Month after month, quarter after quarter, year after year we pay our insurance premiums and we think the whole business to be a racquet; they take our money and we often see little or no return.

That may be true, in fact. Unless you incur a loss or have an accident. When you need the money to repair or replace your vehicle, or cover costly medical expenses for you or perhaps for someone to whom you have caused injury, however, you will quickly learn the value of good car insurance.

Still, the fact remains that accidents relatively are few and far between for individuals, and that the seemingly endlessly rising costs of insurance can be hard to swallow. There are, however, several things that you can do to beat the high cost of car insurance, and still maintain good protection and coverage.

Some Helpful Tips for Lowering Auto Insurance Bills

Full coverage auto insurance is an absolute necessity for your personal protection, and in many states it is compulsory. That does not mean you have to overpay, though. Changes to the insurance industry and state regulations have resulted in increased competition. And when companies compete, consumers win. In order to maximize your winnings, take advantage of some of the following:
• Utilize online auto insurance calculators and comparison websites that do the work for you to find the best rates for the best coverage.
• Once you know the companies with the best insurance rates, consider direct insurance (in which you buy directly from the company with no agent middle-man raising your premium).
• If you are not comfortable with buying and managing insurance direct, find out what local agents carry insurance from the most affordable companies and contact them.
• Make it clear that you know what the policy should cost and what you expect to be paying for the coverage you have selected.
• Make sure the coverage you are getting IS the coverage you want, and when comparing between companies be sure to compare apples to apples (for example, if you are looking for cheap full coverage auto insurance do not settle for a policy that leaves anything out, say, comprehensive coverage, just to lower their cost and look better…in the long run it will not pay).
• Consider the value of your vehicle and carry the levels and types of coverage that are right for your personal situation. Don’t overinsure a junker and don’t underinsure a new or young car.
• Look at things like deductibles and duplicate coverage as ways to decrease your premium (for example, don’t carry and pay for towing coverage if you already have it through an auto club).
• See if your insurer offers discounts for safe drivers, low mileage, driver training, veterans, students, and holding multiple policies with the same carrier or agency (such as homeowners and car insurance) – most will.

If you take each of these points into consideration and you take advantage of the tools and options out there, with a little research you can do a lot to significantly decrease your car insurance burden, while still maintaining good coverage and protection.
