Home Contents Insurance – Are You Properly Covered?

Take a quick inventory of the valuable items in your home: Most people have expensive flat-screen TV’s, a couple of gaming consoles for the children and a 10 year collection of CD’s and DVD’s in their living / television rooms. Then there’s probably the latest state of the art sound system, a decoder, a couple of cell phones and a DVD player or recorder too! Then move on to the more obvious items such as the living room couches, the bar in the corner, the beds and nightstands in the bedrooms. the list goes on and on! Just as you have car insurance to protect you in the case of your car being damaged or stolen, and life insurance to protect you or your family in the case of death or disability, it is also important to have a home contents insurance policy to protect the contents of your home!

We almost forgot about all the “toys” in the spare bedroom. Top of the range golf clubs for mom and dad, 3 sets of the latest diving equipment available on the market and a very expensive bicycle (dad is practicing for the Tour de France in 2020!). This all adds up be quite an expensive toy collection. and that’s putting it mildly!

Contents insurance offers protection against the replacement cost that you will have to pay to replace items such as the ones described above in the event of it being stolen, lost or damaged.
When can you put in a claim against contents insurance? The most obvious claims are in the cases of theft, flood damage, burst water pipes (or fish tanks!) and other similar accidents. Insurance are taken out to protect you against the unforeseen. These accidents cannot be prevented or predicted. that is why it’s called an accident in the first place! Always be prepared for the unavoidable!
Always keep the following in mind when taking out contents insurance for your home:
It does not matter whether you own or rent the property you are currently living in, if you have an one bedroom apartment or a four bedroom house, if you have a proper security system and a fierce watch dog. you still have to protect your personal possessions!

There are different types of contents insurance policies that cater for different requirements.
There are other factors to also consider when you are comparing the different kinds of policies available. It is also possible that some of your items are still covered even if it’s not actually on the physical home property at the time of the accident or incident. For example, when you are transporting an item from one place to another. Never ASSUME that your items will be covered. This differs from policy to policy, from company to company and from item to item, so make sure that you are perfectly aware of what your contents insurance policy will cover, and what will be for your own account.

As with all other insurance policies, make sure that you are adequately insured. Being underinsured can be just as unpleasant as not being insured at all! Take a proper inventory of your home and keep in mind that contents insurance claims will be used to replace items at the current replacement value. You will not be able to replace a television that was bought 10 years ago at the price that you paid 10 years ago!
