How do I get my credit report

February 8, 2011 | Author: | Posted in Credit & Debt

Credit reports are quite important to your fiscal health. But have you ever wondered how to get a copy of your credit report? Luckily, it is far easier than most people realize. Here is how to obtain your report from each of the three credit reporting agencies.

First
Find out if you are eligible for a free report. According to federal law, each person is entitled to get one free copy of their report from each of the three credit bureaus per year. If you have not utilized yours in the last twelve months, then you are eligible.

Second
Visit the bureaus websites. This includes Experian.com, Equifax.com, and TransUntion.com. Each will give you an option to fill out a form enabling you to view your report immediately. You will be asked questions such as your social security number, date of birth, and mother’s maiden name. You may also be asked to verify past addresses or accounts that appear on your credit report. These are very secure websites, so you will not have to worry about any personal information being turned over to the wrong hands. From there, you are usually able to print or save a copy of your report.

It is wise to take advantage of this yearly offer to view your report. From there, you are able to make decisions on purchases and payoffs over the next twelve months. Consider it a perfect opportunity to review your financial health once a year. Now that you are empowered with more information, go out there and take action.
