Stepping into the grownup world was nerve-wrecking for me: I had to learn to be independent in the matter of a couple of weeks and was in utter bafflement for about 2 to 3 months, trying to adjust to the world I had been so rapidly tossed into. Nonetheless, I managed to get out alive and am more independent than I ever was. Research is key, I discovered. One of the most daunting things I have ever had to do is qualify for my driver’s license. I accidently bumped my father’s car when I was a tender 16 year old and have feared getting back behind the steering wheel ever since. But, to be independent, you need to drive yourself around. You could always utilize public transport, but with the way the public transport system in South Africa works, I would rather walk, thank you very much.

I eventually started driving again and soon afterwards qualified for my license. Now it was time to search for the ideal companion: a vehicle! And that was exactly where I realized how little I actually understood about insurance for cars, or insurance coverage for anything for that matter! And so I found myself chucked right into a scary, unfamiliar world yet again. I had to, in just days, learn about motor insurance. I needed to talk the talk in order to walk the walk. I’m referring to understanding how to speak the language of insurance and becoming insurance-savvy!

I explored the basic terms of insurance for cars and was pleasantly surprised at how easy it actually was. I, the person taking out the car insurance policy, am referred to as the insured, and the company supplying me with the coverage is called the insurer. The policy will be the agreement signed between the insurance provider and covered where they agree upon a premium. A premium is the sum you will pay for your coverage monthly.

Yes, it becomes more complicated than this. Phrases like collision coverage, comprehensive coverage and liability coverage are all terminology that you need to understand prior to trying to locate insurance for cars. Thankfully it is not that difficult!
