How to Choose Automobile Coverage

For most consumers, shopping around and getting quotes to find the best deal and coverage rates right up there with a root canal. However, if you understand a bit about how premiums are determined, you may find the experience a little less confusing and a bit more enjoyable.

Things Affecting Your Rates

Before you get online or start calling around to compare auto insurance prices, you should have a few things handy. You will need the vehicle model, engine size, alarm or theft-deterrent device information and safety specks such as airbags, anti-lock brakes, etc. You will also need to supply lien or lease holder information and any special requirements that they have in regards to your coverage.

Keep in mind, unless you own your vehicle free and clear, you will have to have full coverage insurance on it and if you are in a lease, gap insurance will likely be required as well. Other things that will affect your rates are the mileage on your vehicle, the distance you travel daily, the zip code where you reside, marital status, credit rating and of course, your driving record.

Do You Need the Extras?

Here is where consumers tend to get very confused. While there are certain requirements that you have to fill with your coverage, there are also some things you may be able to do without. Many agents will automatically factor in extras like towing, roadside assistance and rental reimbursement. It is important to check for these in your policy, especially with a new car because most manufacturers offer these
services for at least the first 3 years/36,000 miles already. Even if you have an older vehicle, these may not be options that you need and they can make a significant difference in your bill.

Choosing the Right Agent

The opinion of one person in regards to who the best auto insurance companies are could be quite different than someone else. There are a few that are always rated near the top of the list but once again, you need to find an agent and a policy that works best for you.

One person with a clean driving record and an exceptional credit score may feel a particular company is superior but that same agency may be on the bottom of the list for someone with blemished credit, a DUI and a few traffic violations. The important thing to realize is that finding the perfect agent is essentially entering into a long-term commitment. When you find one that you’re comfortable with and trust, you will want to stay with them year after year rather than have to allow yourself to trust someone
new again. There is an agent with the perfect policy out there for you, you just have to put forth a little effort to find them.
