Buying a vehicle is an incredibly intriguing purchase for most people! It doesn’t matter whether you are a student who just got your license or a businessman upgrading to the latest and very best model on the market, getting behind the wheel of a new (or used) vehicle usually puts a grin on everybody’s face!

Not all people would be fortunate enough to be in a position to afford a brand new vehicle, but that doesn’t mean that your vehicle should let you down because of mechanical or other issues. By taking good care of your vehicle there is no reason why your car should not offer you countless happy kilometers!

So what can you do to improve your vehicle’s longevity?

First of all, make sure that your car is correctly serviced and maintained. If your vehicle does not have a maintenance or service plan, this doesn’t mean that you don’t have to regularly inspect the car. Servicing a car goes a long way to make sure that the car’s engine and other moving parts don’t let you down. Services include smaller elements such as oil and filter changes, but also provides for an opportunity to see if there are aspects that require attention. For example, you may well not realize that your brakes require replacing or that your power-steering fluid is running dangerously low – a service technician will be able to identify such issues and guide you on the required steps to take.

Do not forget to take care of your tyres too! Checking your tyre pressures every time you put petrol in your vehicle is a wise thing to do. Driving with a flat tyre will not merely damage the tyre in the long run, but will also have an effect on the performance and handling of your vehicle. And if the tyre bursts you might even lose control over the vehicle and end up with all 4 wheels in the air! Checking tyre pressure will only take a few seconds, do not postpone it and damage your tyres along the way!

Make certain that you use the right fuel. Whilst it’s relatively obvious that you ought to not put diesel in a petrol vehicle or petrol in a diesel vehicle, that is not the only consideration when it comes to fuel. Some cars, especially performance vehicles need a higher octane fuel than regular vehicles. By choosing wrong fuel you can damage your vehicle’s engine to such an extent that the engine must be replaced!

Do not abuse your vehicle! In case you are always over-revving your engine or driving as if the police are chasing you, this can be damaging to your vehicle. Too much of anything is never a good thing, and over-revving the vehicle is no different!

If you are amongst the lucky folks privileged enough to own your own vehicle, ensure that you take correct care of it! Have it serviced regularly, use the correct fuel and examine the tyre pressures regularly – this will most absolutely increase your vehicle’s longevity!
