Stresses of Restaurant Financials
The restaurant industry is said to be one of the biggest financial gambles around. Only one in five restaurants makes it past the five year mark. As if the financial stress of having a regular restaurant were not enough, there are some restaurants which incur even more grief which can make it difficult to overcome and stay profitable enough to stay in business. While not all of the problems a restaurant can encounter directly affect the bottom line, they all have side effects which will drag down the profitability of the restaurant and make it more difficult to succeed.
The Robbery
Getting robbed is enough for most businesses. Even with good insurance, you lose the confidence of some of the employees who work for the company and productivity can go down which affects the amount of money you will be able to make. One of the worst robberies which can happen at a restaurant is a robbery which is violent enough to make the evening news. What happens is not only does the morale of the employees go down. The rest of the community becomes scared to visit the establishment.
Hacking the System
Most restaurants underestimate their vulnerability to attack through the internet. It is easy to forget that the restaurant POS systems are attached to the internet for authentication purposes. All it takes is a knowledgeable person to hack into the system. They can steal all of the information including credit card numbers. If the hacker is not greedy, it is possible to keep stealing information for a long period of time before anyone knows what is going on. When it becomes public your point of sale systems have been hacked, customers do not want to return. Losing guest confidence can ruin your business.
Going Mobile
Many cities have started to allow vendors to create street carts from which they sell food from. Many established restaurants have seen the ability to not only make money but market, so they too have gotten in the game. While it creates a fun way for people to enjoy lunch, it creates a problem for restaurants which cannot get into the mix. They lose out on the business which is being gobbled up by the mobile street carts. While the street cart food vendor is sure to be a fad in the long run, in the short run it is killing the finances of some small restaurants.
Soaring Food Costs
One of the biggest financial challenges a restaurant has other than labor is food costs. When food costs go up, it throws the prices the restaurant has to charge into upheaval. Recently there have been a lot of common ingredients which have started to go up sharply. Everything from bacon to corn and beef has been on the rise. Raising the prices of common staples on the menu can cause patrons to simply go elsewhere leaving your restaurant without any paying customers.
These are only a few of the financial stresses a restaurant has to battle on a daily basis. With these kinds of challenges in mind, it is hard to imagine any restaurant is able to succeed.
