Do you want to get your life back and be absolutely debt free? Do you want to get yourself out of this mess? Then act on it. Struggling with credit card debt may be very hard for you but you can do something to clear up your debt mess. But first, you need to be committed to do everything in your power to pay off your credit card bills. It isn’t easy to stand up after being so deeply in debt. You must have a strong will and a good plan. And you need to realize that being debt free has many benefits, like having a peaceful mind.

There are no secrets for learning how to get out of debt. But there are strategies that work. Here are five steps to help you fix your money problems and sleep better at night:

1) Don’t use your credit cards anymore.
Lock them away. Put them to somewhere in your house where you won’t have easy access to them. Forget you have these cards so that you won’t use them in buying things, because it will only contribute to building up your debt more and more. Learn to use cash that you have in purchasing things. It’s one of the hardest yet most valuable lessons to learn.

2) When shopping, make a list before you go out the door.
When you don’t have a list with you, the tendency is that you’ll buy everything you want and anything you think you need. Bad habit! Sure, you can try to be disciplined about it. But if your spending habits are really bad, you might end up not buying what you really need. By having a list, you’ll be able to prioritize your spending and only buy what’s on your list. The key is to create a list based on how much money you can comfortably spend.

3) Find an additional way to earn money.
One of the simplest ways to fix your money problems is to make more money. You can accomplish this by looking for a part time job or starting a small business on the side. Then use this extra money to pay down your debts. Or if you need to you can use it to pay for monthly expenses like utilities or rent. And if you make enough, you can reward yourself every once in a while and keep some money for special purchases.

4) Allot a reasonable amount of money for everything you need to buy.
Most people dislike the idea of a budget. But in reality a budget is simply a plan for spending the money you earn. You can have a budget for regular monthly expenses, and a separate one for extra expenses. Either way, you’ll learn to control yourself so you just spend what you can actually afford. But be honest with yourself – stick to your budget and don’t cheat.

5) Develop a plan for paying down your credit card debt.
Make a list of all your debts, including the balance, the minimum payment, and the interest rate. Put the debts in order from smallest to largest. Sure, you might save more money by starting with the highest interest rate, but the idea is to see results quickly so you remain motivated. The best way to do this is to start with the smallest debt. For the first debt, pay the minimum plus as much extra as you can afford, even if it is just $10 or $20 a month. Then pay the minimum on all the rest. When you have eliminated the first debt, then do the same thing with the card next on the list. Just keep on doing this and slowly but surely you’ll become free of debt!

Now it is time for the most important step – taking action! Wishing it will happen won’t work. You need to write down your plan, and stick with it until you achieve your goal of getting out of debt completely!
