Tips on Home Improvement and Green Remodeling

This year has seen a decline in the average number of homes that are sold. More homeowners are deciding to continue living in their current homes while doing their utmost to ensure better living conditions. This claim, made by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, is supported by the Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA). Furthermore, LIRA is predicting a two-digit rate of increase in the spending allocated for homeowner improvement.

The popular trend in home remodeling is leaning towards green home remodeling. This is where homeowners save on their energy consumption and, at the same time, reduce the impact on the planet and improve their living conditions. A green home is a sustainable place that is built, or redesigned, in an environmental and efficient way. It encompasses the materials used in construction, energy efficiency and water usage of the property.

Here are several guidelines which can help in attaining the goal of a green, comfortable and earth-friendly home.

Rather than move, you can redesign your home and ensure the design of the house gives just enough warmth or cooling as needed. Opt for a design that is optimized for solar heat, which can be absorbed by the building if the right materials are used. The trapped warmth will be released back into the house as the sun sets.

To have a cool retreat in the house, it is nice to have an underground section built. This construction needs to have proper insulation to give a pleasant, cool atmosphere; not an extreme one. With a flexible design, the inhabitants need not rely on continuous assistance from electrical appliances to provide them with the controlled temperature that their bodies need.

As for the construction materials of the house, choose natural and local materials. These materials will have undergone minimum industrial processing and have low toxicity levels. Architects can help compute the maximum dimension that can be achieved with the minimum cost of materials. Construction materials can also be reused, while natural materials will have no effect on the residents’ health.

To use energy efficiently, choose appropriate appliances before buying them. For lighting systems, LED light variants are the best alternatives, since they have less power consumption compared to fluorescent lamps and ordinary light bulbs. Always remember the simple rule of turning off any appliance that is not in use. Instead of obtaining electricity from the grid, generate renewable energy from resources like solar and wind. There are many commercially available photovoltaic and fuel cells nowadays that the household can utilize.

Choose the furnishings carefully to be placed inside your green home. Cabinets, tables and chairs made from recycled materials are best. Double-purpose equipment can also save space and enhance functionality.

Green houses sell far better than the normal homes, though they cost a little more. You can even buy a cheap foreclosure home, turn it into a green home and then sell it to make money. Smart environment-conscious buyers point out that buying one is a way of showing their commitment in taking part in reducing climate change; with the bonus of reduced energy bills and cleaner quality of indoor air. Sustainable architecture enables people to enjoy simplicity of life while protecting and preserving the earth as a future home for generations to come.
