Tips To Do It Yourself Credit Repair
Many people who have a bad credit rating do not realize that there are some simple steps that they can take to start rebuilding their credit. It will take some time and effort on your part, but if you are serious about credit repair you can make it happen. Here are some credit repair tips to get you on your way.
Obtain A Copy Of Your Credit Report
This is the first step to credit repair. If you do not know what is on your credit report how can you repair it? You can get a copy of your report right on the Internet, usually at no cost. As soon as you get your report you will need to look over it carefully and identify what information reported there that is bringing down your score. Keep an acute eye out for any information on your report that you think is not correct. As you are going through your report highlight any items that you feel are in error. Errors happen all the time and if you find that any of your accounts have been reported incorrectly, you will need to get these corrected.
Dispute Credit Report Errors
With your report you should have received a form that will allow you to dispute information that you believe is not correct. Fill out the form carefully and submit it right away. It is best to send your disputes through certified mail so that you have a record of the bureau receiving your report. You will also want to make copies of any what you send to the bureau so that you have a record of them.
Any item that you dispute, the credit bureau is required to investigate and verify and they must do so in a timely fashion. If you have any supporting documentation you can and should submit it with your dispute. This may help to speed along the process.
Pay Down Your Debt
Another thing you can do to start to rebuild your credit on your own is to pay down your debt. Your credit score is partially figured by your debt to income ratio and the less debt you have, the higher your score.
If you don’t know where to start, begin by developing a budget, cutting out unnecessary expenses and taking all your leftover money each month and put it towards your debts.
Pay Your Bills On Time
Missed payments and late payments can affect your credit rating. One of the best ways to make sure you pay your bills on time is to pay them as soon as you receive them. If this is not possible, mark due dates on your calendar so that you don’t forget them.
Use Cash Instead Of Your Credit Card
Stop using your plastic or use it for just small purchases that you can pay off every month. Never charge more than 20% of your total credit limit, as this again can lower your credit score.
