Nearly every house features a driveway or perhaps a patio. These need something to always be underfoot. Apparently a lot of people prefer to use paving for this specific purpose, but why? There are many of other options available, like gravel or cement by way of example, so just why is paving so popular?

Gravel is often very costly to keep up. It is not merely a case of putting it in and leaving it to its own devices. It has a tendency to be washed away with every storm and carried away in the tyre treads of every car that drives on it. This means that it needs to be replenished from time to time and good quality gravel isn’t cheap. If you happen to be thinking about using gravel on the patio, you better think again! Do you ever walk bare foot on your patio? Imagine being forced to walk over countless little and frequently sharp stones as opposed to something smooth.

Think about concrete or cement? It’s not that hardy and it has to be installed in absolutely perfect weather otherwise it won’t set properly and breaks up for the slightest excuse. It is also very difficult to get it smooth and keep the many critters that may be running around your garden off it whilst it dries. Failure to do so leads to little footprints all over you nice cement floor.

Paving is really a much better option than either of these. It does not hurt your feet when you walk over it without your shoes as the bricks are usually quite smooth. It doesn’t wash away, even during the toughest and most violent of Highveld storms. It is less difficult to lay level and doesn’t take forever to set. It can be walked on almost the moment it has been laid.

It also looks much neater compared to other options. It can be laid to enhance the walls and decor of your home. You do not need to have borders put in to help keep the bricks from washing away as you do with gravel.

Admittedly, the cement between the bricks that keeps them together may crack and permit small plants to grow in between the bricks, but just a little weed killer sprayed on the paving from time to time soon takes care of that small problem. If you ever grow tired of your paving in its current arrangement and want to have a relatively different pattern in place, the only thing that needs to happen is the current bricks need to be moved and the new ones out in place. You do not need to dig up and break up the floor like you would with concrete, nor need to bother about finding all the little pebbles in your gravel driveway (or replace all of them).

In general, paving is a fairly quick and easy option for covering your patio floor or making a driveway in front of your house. It is cheaper than gravel in the long run and looks much neater than concrete.
