Behind every stalled payment is a reason, and Rapid Collections starts there before deciding how to move the account forward.

With Rapid, recovery does not come at the expense of the relationship.

“We lean into what really happened here and what is truly the best outcome for both parties,” says Robert Barger, CEO and managing partner.

When cash is limited, a debtor may be deciding which of several creditors to pay first. Rapid works to make its client a payment priority by keeping the conversation respectful and productive. The aim is to move the account toward payment without creating hostility that could make the debtor less willing to engage.

In commercial collections, the debtor may still be a customer, partner or future source of business, so how an account is handled can influence what happens after the balance is paid. Barger describes Rapid’s role at times as being “almost like an arbitrator,” balancing the facts with the circumstances behind them.

Respect does not mean avoiding escalation. Even when a debtor refuses to pay despite a supported obligation, Rapid allows time to review the claim and talk before outlining the consequences of continued nonpayment. For organizations in government, lobbying and advertising, where accounts may be sensitive, Rapid protects confidentiality, follows applicable requirements and allows a response before stronger action.

Its approach traces back to 2003, when Barger was running accounts receivable for a global public relations organization. Reputation, communication and client relationships mattered alongside recovering what was owed. Uncomfortable with handing those relationships to a conventional collection agency, he built the kind of collection partner he would have trusted himself.

Today, that is one reason more than 70 percent of the businesses Rapid has collected from later turn to the company for help recovering their own receivables.

Turning Recovery into Prevention

Getting an overdue invoice paid solves the immediate problem, but not necessarily what made it difficult to collect.

Collection conversations can reveal that an account was allowed to remain unpaid internally, performance issues contributed to the dispute or other factors weakened the client’s position. Rapid shares what it learns so similar issues can be addressed before they become future losses.

Barger calls the model “protection and collection.” One recovers what is owed; the other helps protect the client’s investment going forward.

A recent healthcare engagement shows the approach in practice. A client placed roughly $25 million in debt tied to prescription drugs supplied to nursing homes and medical facilities. Much of it was three to five years old, while many facilities had changed ownership. Rapid gathered supporting documentation, contacted prior owners and explained how the obligations remained connected to earlier transactions. Barger says debt initially viewed as roughly 20 percent recoverable became about 85 percent recoverable, representing approximately $20 million in collectible value.

Voice First, Data Behind It

Barger does not believe automation should replace the conversation that can determine whether someone pays. Automated texts and emails can push debtors further away, while a phone call creates room for context, judgment and negotiation.

“AI in our world is good for background, not front line,” he says.

Technology works behind those conversations. Rapid codes accounts through the collection stages and measures whether they are progressing. Clients have 24/7 portal access to activity, next steps and expected dates, with the ability to request more or less aggressive action or pause a step.

Monthly executive reports show what was submitted, claim strength, debtor interactions and timelines, supporting cash forecasting and internal improvement. Rapid is also expanding through affiliations with collection agencies, law firms and asset recovery specialists. Barger says its global network exceeds 500 people through those relationships.

For Rapid, recovery also means protecting the client’s reputation, preserving future business where possible and preventing the next collection problem. It’s the reason why Rapid Collections is a deserving recipient of Financial Services Review’s Top Commercial Debt Collection Solutions 2026 recognition.
